The pit firing event will be on March 8th from 10 AM. The event will be in Monticello, IN, about a 45 minute drive from Lafayette.
Here are some suggestions for preparing your ceramic pieces.
This outing should not be thought of as a true workshop but an opportunity for the guild to get together and enjoy everyone’s ideas and love of ceramics. That said I’m willing to share my limited knowledge with anyone and I hope everyone who attends has a great time.

Here are some suggestions for preparing your ceramic pieces.
- A white clay body shows some colors of oxides better but red or brown clays will also work. I use B-mix cone 5
- I use Terra Sigillata and burnish my pots but that is a personal preference.
- I have aluminum foil to sager your pots but we can always use more and limited amounts of copper wire and some other colorants. If you want to bring other items to put around your pots please feel free to do so. Some items that work well are,, course sugar, iron and copper oxides, walnut hulls, dried banana peals, leaves, salt or jute, soaked in salt water. Just about anything that can vaporize or burn will leave a reaction on your pots.
- Your pots must be dry to be fired as you would guess they will explode if they are not. Compact pieces tend to weather the firing better than tall pieces. This is due to the fact that the firing tends to overheat part of tall pots unevenly.
